Vintage Thai Chedi ReliquaryA finely carved and turned sandalwood stupa shape, constructed as a reliquary box in stupa form. This box is composed of two reliquary chambers, a squat bell shaped dome on a circular tiered base forms one chamber in the base. The finial spire serving as the lid to the second chamber in the bell has multiple tapered rings culminating in a lotus bud spire. Clear lacquer over the exterior and the interior remains unfinished. Stupa form reliquaries were historically made to enshrine relics (remnants) of the Buddha or revered acolytes, disciples, teachers, texts and sacred objects. Often reliquaries such as this are devotional objects given to local temples to enshrine or held in or displayed in a home altar.Mid 20th century.Signs of wear and use otherwise fine.4 in. high x 1.875 in. in diameter ( 102 x 48 mm)1.1 oz.
