Vintage Tibetan Buddhist Prayer Wheel Copper Wood Nepal Mani Khorlo 9.25in
A mid-twentieth-century Tibetan Buddhist handheld prayer wheel, or mani khorlo, from the Himalayan devotional tradition of Nepal. The rotating cylindrical body is formed in copper-toned metal with contrasting metal fittings and is mounted on a turned wooden handle, complete with its original chain-mounted counterweight.
The prayer cylinder is decorated with multiple registers of raised Tibetan script bordered by ornamental bands. Naturally developed patina, darkened recesses and brighter high points from handling give the metal surface considerable depth, while the turned wood handle displays the warm character associated with devotional use.
Importantly, the rotating cylinder retains its internal rolled mantra prayer scroll, preserving the functional devotional character of the object. The complete assembly of prayer cylinder, wooden handle, chain, counterweight and mantra scroll makes this a compelling example of Tibetan Buddhist ritual art suited to a meditation space, altar, or collection of Himalayan devotional objects.
