This piece is called \"opaque\" ratherthan burnished because it lacks the sheen of burnished wares.
Tonalá style pottery is a highly collectible type of oldMexican pottery, and this is a good example with its bold and colorfulbrushwork (Reference: McMenamin, Donna. 1996. Popular Arts of Mexico: 1850-1950. Schiffer Publishing Ltd., pp. 72-86).
