A cast crest from SUBREFITTRAGRU La Maddalena, the US Navy Submarine Refit and Training Group on the island of La Maddalena, off the north coast of Sardinia, Italy.
The group was set up in the early 1970s aboard a submarine tender anchored at Santo Stefano, where US nuclear attack submarines in the Mediterranean came for repairs and crew training. It later became Submarine Squadron 22, and the base was handed back to Italy in 2008 after more than 35 years.
The shield is split into four: a trident over waves, the US flag, the winged lion of St. Mark holding a book marked "PAX", and an atom. Two dolphins flank it, with a submarine below and the banner "SUBREFITRAGRU LA MADDALENA". Mounted on a walnut plaque.
Condition:
• Pre-owned. Age patina on the cast crest.
• Light wear on the wood, as pictured. Hanger holes on back.
