This is a beautiful, authentic vintage Russian papier-mâché lacquer trinket box from the historic folk art village of Kholui (Холуй). Hand-painted during the late Soviet era (circa 1970s–1980s), this highly detailed piece features the iconic fantasy scene "Ruslan and the Head" from Alexander Pushkin's famous epic poem, *Ruslan and Ludmila*.
The lid showcases incredible dynamic composition, vivid fiery tones, and brilliant gold filigree border work characteristic of the Kholui school of miniature painting.
Authentication & Inscriptions:
- Lower Left Lid: Titled in traditional gold Cyrillic script «Руслан и голова» (Ruslan and the Head).
- Lower Center Lid: Marked with the village of origin "с. Холуй" (Village of Kholui).
- Lower Right Lid: Signed by the artist "худ. Жильников" (Artist Zhilnikov).
- Bottom Base: Features the hand-painted, authentic English export mark "Made in USSR", confirming its production during the late Soviet period for international distribution.
Condition:
The box is in very good vintage condition. The lacquer on the top and bottom retains an exceptionally bright, high-gloss mirror shine. The hinges work perfectly, and the interior is clean. As is typical for vintage hand-painted papier-mâché pieces of this age, there are only minor flecks of light surface wear on the outer base edges (visible upon close inspection).
