This shape seems unique - I haven't seen another like it. I love the two birds facing one another - and the hands at the top near the tail feathers is amazing. It is the spirit of joining for sure. I don't know which culture this is from....I am assuming east Asia, but beyond that, no idea! If you have info, please share. It's closer to a brown color than red, fyi. Not sure if it was red initially. In certain lights, the camera thinks it's more red than my eye does. This is quite weighty at a bit over 3 pounds.
This is in good to fair vintage condition. There are a number of lacquer chips around the sections of lid and base where the two join. There bottom has white paint smudges across it - not sure if it's shelf wear or what. The bottom also has a ding in it.There is a radiating crack in the lacquer in the lid where it looks like it was bumped neat the top where the two lobes come together. Please examine the photos carefully. Thanks.
Despite the condition issues, I think this is a wonderful example of asian lacquer ware.This measures 11 1/2" across, 10 1/2" top to bottom and stands 4 1/2" tall when lying flat.
