Vintage WPA Depression Era Museum Extension Project "The Sandman" Marionette: $375.00
This rare Sandman marionette is a vintage item from the Great Depression. He has a cloth body, upper legs and arms, wooden lower legs and shoes, hand sewn hands and a papier mache head. The creator signed Sandman and his initials on the bottom of the shoe and on the left leg and on the propeller board. The Sandman visits children in the evening, sprinkles sleep inducing sand into their eyes which creates dreams for the morning. These marionettes and puppets were originally used in schools for educational purposes. The Museum Extension Project was one of the historical relief programs launched during the depression under President Roosevelt's New Deal to rescue unemployed Americans from poverty and to produce something of public benefit. Condition: strings are tangled, scuffs, some paint loss to face, some staining to clothing and one hole in a pantleg. Clothing is all original including neck tie, overcoat, white scarf, belt with buckle, and over the shoulder SANDBAG. The Marionette stands 20" tall.
