A wonderfully expressive hand-painted English character jug from Wedgwood & Co.'s Ye Olde Town Hall series, depicting the traditional Night Watchman in his red greatcoat, dark hat and enormous gray mustache, carrying his lantern as he makes his evening rounds.
The underside bears the original Wedgwood & Co. Ltd., England unicorn backstamp and identifies the figure as “Ye Olde Town Hall – Night Watchman.” Model number 754/3 is impressed into the base. This was made by Wedgwood & Co. Ltd., a separate Staffordshire pottery concern.That distinction actually gives you better search terminology because collectors of British character and Toby jugs know the Wedgwood & Co. series.
Dating to approximately the 1950s, the Night Watchman was part of Wedgwood & Co.'s collectible series of distinctly British town characters.
