Fabulously detailed transferware image of the S.S. Grand View Point Hotel- built to replicate a steamboat- in the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania

Border edge has Pennsylvania native flowers such as wild roses, burdock, and ivy. There is a zigzag type design at the very edge of the plate, which gives the illusion of a zigzag edge. Edge is actually smooth.

Color of the pink transferware is wonderful- a very rich pink with dark and light pink detailing to add depth and interest

Background base is a cream color [not white]

Made by Old Stafforshire Ware/Jonroth of England specifically as a souvenir to be sold in the hotel gift shop in the early 1930s. The back says that it was imported for Captain H. Paulson. This is a highly collectible plate, and quite rare. Very few examples of this image survive today.

Excellent PRISTINE condition- no nicks chips cracks scratches fading or repair. Has light crazing throughout the glaze which has not darkened or \'foxed\' at all, so it is not evident unless searching. This crazing is normal and expected for age. See all pics and use zoom.

History of the hotel:

The S.S. Grand View Point Hotel, also known as the ShipHotel or Ship of the Alleghenies, was a historic hotel and roadside attractionin Juniata Township in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, United States. It wasbuilt in 1927 as a hotel, but did not become the Ship Hotel until the additionswhich made it look like a ship were completed in 1932. The hotel was listed onthe National Register of Historic Places in 1997, but after the hotel burneddown in 2001 it was delisted in 2002. The hotel was built in 1927, but was nottransformed into the Ship Hotel until an expansion in 1932. Herbert Paulson, aDutch-born man, had the idea for what would become the landmark. The shipdesign was chosen since fog in the valley reportedly looked like the sea. After1931, the Ship Hotel blossomed. At noon on May 29, 1932, after it was announcedin the local Bedford Gazette, the ship opened, offering tours and concerts. Onthat day, the Bedford American Legion Junior band, a local German band, and theBedford High School band played, while a plane flew overhead dropping flowerson the ship\'s deck and a stilt walker entertained guests. The hotel wasdescribed as having \"one of the most significant scenic views on the NorthAmerican continent\" with views of a fertile region of Pennsylvania, WestVirginia, and of Maryland\'s rolling hills. The main claim was that you couldsee three states and seven counties from the ship. By 1954, reportedly 2million people had visited it, covering 20 volumes of registers, including thoseliving in 62 foreign countries and famous celebrities such as Calvin Coolidge,Henry Ford, and Thomas Edison. Over the years, the hotel made much of its moneyin souvenirs and refreshments. After the 1970s, the ship fell into disrepair,burning down in 2001
