Vintage ROYAL DOULTON Toby Character Jug FARMER JOHN England LARGE INSIDE HANDLE
Size 6.5" high x 8" wide [side to side] x 6" deep
This is a RARE ONE- Royal Doulton made two versions in the large 6.5" size of this Toby Jug- one with the handle on the outside of the jug [very common]- and one with the handle curving down into the INSIDE of the jug. This is the MUCH MORE UNCOMMON 'inside handle' jug.
SUPERB COLORATION and Glazing
Colors are magnificent- these were each hand painted, and the person that glazed this particular piece had a real gift for color and glaze- it's got the best coloration of a Farmer John Toby Jug I've ever seen. Very rich, deep, lifelike colors with extremely realistic skin and eye coloration [including flushed cheeks].
A FUN piece.
Facial expression is wonderful, with a sly grin showing his teeth. Back of piece has the word FARMER JOHN embossed into the glaze, with a sheaf of wheat underneath.
Beautiful 3-D detailing
Excellent/pristine condition! LARGE SIZE for a Toby Jug. No crazing and no chips nicks cracks or scratches. No repairs. Must have been VERY carefully stored. Glaze is glossy and unfaded.
Heavy and well made
Marked with all the appropriate Royal Doulton England marks on underside
This piece is circa 1938 and is discontinued
