Vintage SHELF-SITTING CAT Oaxacan Alebrije MEXICO Wood Carving/Hand Painted SIGNED
Size 6\" long x 2\" deep x 6\" high from bottom of paw to tip of curved tail
Sits and balances very securely on a shelf with the left paw draped downwards over the edge. Very well balanced, and deep enough that it will not topple over.
Features a gorgeous handmade/hand carved/hand painted cat made from Copal wood. She has a metal wire tail which is wrapped with spiral paper [painted and lacquered].
Signed by Artist on underside, along with OAX for Oaxaca and S. Martin for San Martin. Artist\'s name is Juan Hernandez-Cruz and is hand signed.

This particular cat is quite magnificent- above and beyond the usual tourist material. It is a fantastic, slightly elongated shape which is quite elegant.
The painted patterns on this cat are marvelous- cobalt blue background with thousands of tiny white dots and multicolored polka dots. This is QUITE UNIQUE and UNUSUAL from the typical patterning.

Alebrijes are creatures carved out of wood and painted withZapotec patterns and fantastic designs from the Artist’s own imagination. Thesecolorful one-of-a-kind carvings are handmade using wood of the copal tree whichis grown in the surrounding fields of the towns and is considered a sacred treewhich only grows in the region of Oaxaca. This wood is sustainably sourced fromthe branches of the tree, in order to preserve the life of the tree and ensurea continued source of wood for the future. Alebrijes are traditionally made inOaxaca in the towns of San Martin Tilcajete as well as San Antonio Arrazola.These beautiful works of art have become very popular over the years among Artcollectors worldwide and are highly sought after.
Excellent condition, no nicks chips scratches or flaking to paint, no fading, and no damage or repair to the paper & wire tail. The tail is moveable to adjust its position. A tiny bit of missing paint where the tail bends- super minor- see last pic.
