Tasked with transitioning the islands from military to civilian rule, Taft had been appointed to the role by President William McKinley following the Spanish-American War, a position he held from March 1900 to December 1903.Later, Taft served as president of the United States from March 4, 1909 to March 4, 1913, and later Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1921 to 1930.
