SHOP WINDOW REFLECTION 1981 Gelatin Silver Photograph
This original 5 x 7 black and white photograph was taken and developed by Thomas Schmidler in New York City in 1981. The image layers interior and exterior worlds through a reflective storefront window, blending a figure inside with the ghosted outlines of cars and street life outside. The patterned display surface at the base adds an unexpected decorative contrast to the dim, utilitarian space beyond the glass.
Schmidler’s eye captures the ambiguity of transparency and reflection—faces, objects, and light overlap in a way that blurs reality and perception. The photograph invites the viewer to look twice, noticing how environment and subject merge in a single frame.
