This is simply a stunning piece and would be the center of a WWII Marine Corps Officers display. These coats were of course used in the winter by Officers usually in formal occasions. This one is simply exceptional. Dated 1940, and named to Lt. L.G. Coutts, I have not researched this piece. Made by the prestigious Horstmann firm in Philadelphia, I am certain poor Lt. Coutts paid a high price for this, to probably only wear it once or twice before Pearl Harbor. It was likely packed away for the war and likely the rest of his days.
These were incredibly expensive when purchased. It is about 15 pounds of wool. This one has all parts and pieces in gorgeous condition. Vibrant bright colors with no fading at all. I see thee very small pencil point moth holes inside on the left side on the scarlet lining. These are incredibly small and don\'t show when it is displayed (see photos). Otherwise this is stone mint. Lovely velvet collar, three steel hooks to secure it around the neck and a great mohair rope to fasten it closed across the top of the chest. Nice medium size, just pure guess probably a 38 or 40, should fit perfectly on any mannequin or dress form for display. Not much more can be said and I am certain you will never upgrade this one, especially if looking for a WWII or pre WWII piece.
