Original black patent-leather chinstrap is present and complete. It is shown loose/hanging in several photographs, with one photograph showing the strap positioned across the front of the cap between the original gilt U.S. Navy eagle buttons.

Vintage U.S. Navy combination/service visor cap, size 7 1/8, retailed by Dave Margolis of Washington, D.C.
The surviving construction is strongly consistent with a U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer combination cap and features:
* Dark navy cloth crown
* Wide black mohair-style cap band
* Polished black visor with green underside
* Original black patent-leather-type chinstrap
* Original gilt U.S. Navy eagle buttons
* Brown perforated leather sweatband
* Interior lining/sweat shield
* Original size 7 1/8 marking
* Dave Margolis / Silogram / Washington, D.C. interior retailer label
The original chinstrap is included. It is shown loose in most photographs and positioned across the front of the cap in one photograph to demonstrate its proper configuration. The strap and original Navy buttons show age-related wear.
Dave Margolis of Washington, D.C. is documented in a 1942 U.S. Navy publication as a retailer selling Navy uniforms during World War II, providing notable historical context for the retailer label found inside this cap.
U.S. Navy historical uniform documentation describes Chief Petty Officer combination caps with black patent-leather chinstraps secured by small gilt Navy eagle buttons, consistent with the surviving components of this example.
The original center-front cap device/insignia is missing. A Chief Petty Officer cap would normally carry a fouled-anchor device at the front. Because the original device is no longer present, the exact rank of the original wearer cannot be conclusively established from the cap alone.
The cap’s construction and components are consistent with period U.S. Navy combination-cap designs. Although Dave Margolis is documented as selling Navy uniforms during WWII, this particular cap does not have a visible dated military contract label. Therefore, an exact manufacture year is not claimed.
