A 5.5x3.5" vintage RPPC photo postcard from the estate of a vintage automobile postcard collector. This was part of a huge collection of antique postcards.
Photo Overview
A young man named Will poses at the wheel of his brass-era touring automobile, parked along a small-town main street in front of a drug store. The car is a classic early American touring model dating to roughly 1908 to 1910, with a folding top, right-hand steering, brass acetylene headlamps, wooden artillery-spoke wheels with light-colored tires, and a rear tonneau body. Distinctive features include the twin brass side lamps, the exposed engine hood with brass water cap, and the characteristic high-mounted seating of the period.
Behind the automobile you can see storefronts including a drug store with a striped awning and large plate-glass display windows, a striped canvas overhang, and a wooden utility pole. Painted signage on the neighboring storefront window and awning helps place this in a bustling early twentieth century commercial district. The photograph captures the excitement of early motoring in small-town America, when owning an automobile was a genuine mark of status and modernity.
