William McKinley was the 25th President of the United States, serving from 1897 until his assassination in 1901. Theodore Roosevelt was his Vice President and succeeded him as the 26th President after McKinley’s death.
McKinley led the nation through the Spanish–American War, oversaw significant territorial expansion (including the annexation of Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines), and presided over a period of rapid economic growth.
Roosevelt was selected as McKinley’s running mate for the 1900 election, partly due to political maneuvering by New York’s Republican leadership, who wanted to move Roosevelt out of the governor’s office.
As Vice President, Roosevelt had a relatively minor role until McKinley’s assassination.
