*******************Wonderful Carved San Ildefonso Redware Bowl by Rose here is a mint-condition carved redware bowl by the well-known potter Rose Gonzales (1900-1989) of San Ildefonso Pueblo in New Mexico. Rose was one of a handful of famous pottery matriarchs from San Ildefonso, working alongside such notables as Maria Martinez and Blue Corn. This bowl was polished to a lovely red-rust tone, reflecting the clay Rose dug herself from the hills around the Pueblo. Rose is known for her soft carving, with the signature rounded edges of the details she carved. This pot has a wonderful Avanyu, the mythical horned creature with the long, sinewy body.
This pot was purchased from Allan Hayes, a noted dealer and authority, and author of many books on Pueblo pottery. This piece dates from the mid-20th century, with Allan Hayes estimating 1945 as the year of production. The original inventory card from Mr. Hayes is included with this pot, and the selling price is listed as $1250.
