DESCRIPTIONA vintage postcard titled "Zeppelin in Luzern" capturing the airship LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin passing low over the Reuss River, framed directly above Lucerne's Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) and the octagonal Wasserturm, with the city's clock tower and lakeside hotels filling out the skyline behind it.The airship is rendered in sharp, well-defined detail against an open sky, a genuinely striking composition given how many Zeppelin-over-city postcards from this era crowd the airship into a corner or shoot it from too great a distance to read any detail.The Graf Zeppelin made its first flight over Switzerland on September 26, 1929, roughly three weeks after completing its historic around-the-world voyage, repeating the run on the following two days and returning to Swiss skies more than seventy times between 1929 and 1934, with Lucerne and the Vierwaldstättersee a favorite route among Alpine sightseers aboard.This card's printed title and composition place it within that circa 1929 wave of Lucerne overflights, one of the most celebrated seasons in the airship's career.Published by W. Zimmermann-Straessler of Lucerne, card No. 520. The card is unposted with a blank, undivided message field on the reverse, so it was never mailed.
