For sale is a Victorian trade card advertising the sweet wares of Charles Frederick Gunther, the famed German-American chocolatier known as the Candy Man of Chicago. This chromolithograph depicts a young girl in a ruffled white bonnet and vibrant red dress peering over a branch at a resting blue butterfly. The lower portion of the card features an embossed winter forest landscape with delicate snowy details. Gunther established his confectionery empire in 1868 and became equally famous for his eccentric collection of historical artifacts, including Libby Prison which he transported to Chicago for his museum. This card represents the height of the 19th-century advertising craze when colorful lithography was used to capture the imaginations of potential customers. The reverse side shows the deep impressions from the embossing process and remains blank as was common for cards intended for personal scrapbooks.

I believe it is from the victorian era (c1870s-c1890s) based on the feel and design of the card.
