JamesAlexander Grimsley Jr.(November 14,1921 – June 11, 2013), was aUnited States ArmyMajor Generaland combat veteran of two wars who alsoserved as President of his alma mater,The Citadel, The MilitaryCollege of South Carolinafrom 1980 to 1989.Grimsleywas born and raised inFlorence, South Carolina.After graduating withThe Citadel, class of 1942, he was commissioned as aSecond Lieutenantinthe US Army and immediately went to the Pacific Theater to fight inWorld War II. He held numerous high leadership positionsincluding command of an infantry brigade in Vietnam, a tour as AssistantCommander of the2d ArmoredDivisionand service on theArmy GeneralStaff. His career culminated with an assignment as aDeputyAssistant Secretary of Defense. After 33 years of service, Grimsleyretired from the active duty in 1975. Grimsley came to The Citadel in 1975 asVice President for Administration and Finance; he was named President in 1980upon the resignation of his predecessor, Vice AdmiralJames B. Stockdale.Histenure at the Citadel was marked by a return to traditional values in the corpsof cadets, a significant increase in applications, major physical improvementsto the campus and rising academic rankings.[WhenGrimsley retired in 1989, he was named President Emeritus. This distinction hadpreviously only been given to GeneralCharles SummerallandGeneralMark Clark.
