THE GRAND CROSS OF THE IRON CROSS 1870- 1913 VERSION-ORIGINAL EXHIBITION-early 1920's -1930's COPY w/BOX-in very good condition-SEE PHOTO -The Grand Cross of the Iron Cross was twice the size of the Iron Cross and was worn from a ribbon around the neck. The Grand Cross comes in the box-the iron core is surrounded by the Silver Frame-with a measurement of 63.5 millimeters overall- The cross's Silver frame is Hallmarked 800 as is the Silver hanger-The weight of this Grand Cross is approximately 48.1 grams-The Ribbon is 13 inches long and 15 inches with the ribbon tie-downs-The ribbon is UV Negative-There is no separation of the iron core or silver frame-This is an Exhibition copy of the GRAND CROSS- Very few exhibition copies ever come to market-since originals are never available-These are rare and seldom come up for sale-This particular cross came from Germany-This medal is a high quality exhibition three piece Multi Part magnetic construction-This is a rare opportunity to acquire a Historical piece for your collection-Extremely rare, recipient originals are not available. The Grand Cross of the Iron Cross was the highest Prussian war decoration from 1813 to 1918 and the highest of the German Empire from 1939 to 1945. The Grand Cross was Instituted as the highest level of the Iron Cross on March 10, 1813 by the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III. in Wroclaw. It was awarded a total of 20 times in four wars. During the First World War the Grand Cross was awarded five times to the following recipients:Field Marshal Paul Von Hindenburg (December 9, 1916)Kaiser Wilhelm II (December 11, 1916) Field Marshal August Von Mackensen (January 9, 1917) Prince Leopold of Bavaria (March 4, 1918) Field Marshal Erich Ludendorff (March 24, 1918). Reichmarshall Herman Goring became the only recipient of the Grand Cross of the Iron Cross during World War Two when it was awarded to him at the Field Marshal Ceremony on 19 July 1940 in his role as the Supreme Commander of the Luftwaffe for leading them to victory in the French Campaign.
