Fort Towson, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma was a strategic Frontier post on the Red River , originally a cluster of tents and wood huts named Cantonment Towson. An Original Letter from Lt Silas Casey at Cantonment Towson, May 4, 1828 to GeneralGeorgeGibson, re commissary reports. The 1pp 8 x 11" ink letter has archival repairs on reverse and age stains, Overall VG.Cantonment Towsonwas established in 1824, abandonedin 1829 and the new Fort Towsonwas built 6 miles away, serving as the point for the destinationof the Choctaw Indians during the Trail of Tears. Lt Casey, a new graduate of West Point in 1828, remainedin the Army, and after frontiercommands rose to major general rank, serving with distinction in the Civil War. He is also remembered as author of the Infantry tactics manualused during the Civil War.This is the only Cantonment Towson item I have seen in my 40 years of collecting Frontier post items.
