MENAI SUSPENSION BRIDGE & BRITTANIA TUBULAR BRIDGE - WALES - 6 CDV PHOTOS:
$125.00

We are offering 6 original CDV photographs of bridges across the Menai Strait, Wales. Circa 1870s.
1., 2., 3., & 4.) Menai Suspension Bridge, Bangor - different views. [Bridge connects Bangor, Wales to the Isle of Anglesey] The first 3 photos are by F. Bedford, Photographer to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales; the last one is by F. Findlow, Smith Street, Warwick. Titles of photos are "Suspension Bridge and Menai Straits from the Road to the Bridges"; "The Suspension Bridge from the Road"; "The Suspension Bridge from the Bathing Place"; and "Menai Suspension Bridge, North Wales". **NOTE** - according to an historic bridge website, the bridge was built in 1826 using wrought iron chairs, with additions made to it in 1840 and 1893 to stiffen the deck.
5.) Untitled photo - believe it is the Menai Suspension Bridge. In the forefront there is a huge tree stump with sections of the cut tree on the ground, and a man sits on what appears to be a tree stump. There is a small structure on the shore that appears to be on stilts, and another structure down the shore up against the cliffs. The photo is by W. H. Barton, 26 Triangle, Clifton. Printed at the top is "Bingham's Series of Views of Clifton & Bristol.
6.) Untitled photo but written in pencil on the back is "Tubular Bridge Menai", which was named the "Britannia Bridge".This second bridge over Menai Strait was built in 1850 for the purpose of rail travel across the strait. The bridge caught fire in 1970 when local youths exploring it dropped their burning torch. The bridge was later rebuilt, and during reconstruction the bridge changed dramatically.
