(Pictures of the pipes we have in stock are available on request)Also known as a Reader or Reading Pipe, this is one of the very earliest pipe shapes and still remains popular. The story goes that Churchwarden pipes were named after night watchmen, from the time when church doors were never locked. As smoking was not allowed inside church buildings, these pipes were fitted with exceptionally long stems so the pipe could hang out of an open window and the smoke would waft away into the great outdoors. The overall length of the fishtail mouthpiece ensures a pleasant cool smoke particularly suitable for an evening\'s relaxation. Originally designed for the Danish market, this shape boasts a more slender and fluid form than many of our traditional designs, featuring a hybridised bowl that combines elements of the Dublin and Acorn, followed by a sweeping transition that carries gracefully into its trim shank. Churchwarden Smooth pipes combine our elegant range of long-stemmed Churchwarden designs with a rich, warm walnut stain that highlights the bowl\'s natural grain patterns. Accented by bright metal bands, these Churchwarden pipes are well-suited to enjoyment with a good book and a wee dram. Since 1945, we have crafted a range of Churchwarden pipes. Modelled after the old clay tavern pipes of yesteryear, they are among our most slender and elegant designs, featuring a number of smaller bowl shapes paired to elongated fishtail mouthpieces, and available in a variety of finishes.
