[Judaica] Trade Card For Presidential Election With Belva Lockwood Serving Men For Sale

[Judaica] 3 x 5 rare trade card advertises the 1888 Presidential Election and Jacob Christ’s Red Wing Beer.

Interestingly, Belva Lockwood, running on the National Equal Rights Party ticket, is in the background, along with Carl Schurz, both of whom are seen serving others in the room, indicating subservience.

Lockwood ran for President in 1884 and 1888. The card also contains the images of other Presidential candidates and their running mates — Benjamin Harrison and Levi Morton of the Republican Party, Grove Cleveland and Allen Thurman of the Democratic Party, Clinton B. Fisk and John A. Brooks, Prohibition Nominees. Cleveland won the 1884 election. All, except, Lockwood have been identified on the verso by a previous owner.

The vignette is set in a bar. Advertising text states “Our Politics May Differ But We Certainly Agree That “Jacob Christ’s Red Wing Beer Leads Them All.” The presence of Belva Lockwood with the group is a major step in the reluctant, and still-evolving acceptance of women in non-traditional roles.

Schurz’s presence as a server in the image is notable. He was intensely involved in political office, but was unable to run for president, having been born in Germany. Still, he was highly active in political office. After Republican Rutherford B. Hayes won the 1878 presidential election, he appointed Schurz as Secretary of the Interior, where he sought to make civil service based on merit rather than on political connections. He also served as ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain. In 1861, he served as general in the American Civil War, fighting in the Battle of Gettysburg and major other battles. He later represented Missouri in the United States senate.

Overall, in very good condition with a couple of small scratches to one image.
