De Soto National Memorial was located five miles west of Bradenton, FL, and commemorated the 1539 landing of Hernando de Soto and the first extensive organized exploration by Europeans of what is now the southern US.
The memorial contained approximately 26 acres where the Manatee River joins Tampa Bay, including 300 feet of Florida's Suncoast coastline. The park was closed due to decimation of the Visitor Center and Replica Camp by 6 feet of storm surge related to hurricane Helene in October 2024. A reopening date has not been disclosed over a year later.
The token front depicts the Replica Camp, an Indian Village captured by DeSoto and used as his Base Camp. The reverse displays the large stone monument marking the start of the De Soto Trail.
