This tecpatl (typically made of chert, flint, or obsidian) is a specimen from Mexico made between 1200 - 1521 AD by the Aztec. This artifact was used for ritual sacrifice as the Aztec believed blood nourished the sun god Huītzilōpōchtli in his daily battle against darkness. Some similar examples are mounted on ornate handles though it's likely that not all were. (this describes the original artifact, not the replica listed here)
