Moldavite \"hedgehogs\" are formed through a two-step process: the rapid cooling of extraterrestrial impact glass and millions of years of natural acid etching.
1. Initial Formation (Extraterrestrial Impact):
About 14.5 million years ago, a massive meteorite struck modern-day southern Germany, creating the Ries Crater. The intense impact melted the local sedimentary rock. This molten, plasma-like silica vapor was violently ejected into the upper atmosphere and cooled so quickly that the minerals hardened into natural green glass before raining down in the Czech Republic.
2. Sculpting (Natural Acid Etching):
As the glass cooled, some pieces developed internal stress points and structural inconsistencies. When deposited in the slightly acidic soils and groundwater of Central Europe, the earth slowly ate away at the glass over millions of years. Because the weaker areas of the glass dissolved more quickly, this natural erosion carved out deep valleys, sharp points, and intricate web-like textures.
The famous \"hedgehog\" shapes (found notably near Besednice in the Czech Republic) possess an unusually dense and spiky texture due to the specific acidity and mineral composition of the soil in that particular area.
