Three handwritten documents relating to these Bennington, Vermont men and their families...intertwined families as Uriah\'s sister Hannah married Stephen Hinsdill in 1807. There is a Bennington neighborhood called Hinsdillville after Stephen Hinsdill, a notable man in Bennington history. He left Bennington with his family in 1836, moving to Grand Rapids Michigan for business purposes as much was failing.

Very large sums of money for this time period ($50,000) spoken of in the longest document. Edgerton was born in Bennington in 1780 and died there and had seven children. Hinsdale was also born in Bennington, in 1787 and he and his brother Joseph were merchants and manufacturers, they ran, among other things, successful cotton mills, amassing a fortune. He became a deaconof the First Congressional Church in Old Bennington and was a part of the Vermont Anti-Slavery Society along with other civic positions of note. Hinsdale lost most of his money in the financial panic of 1837 and accrued considerable debt. These documents seem to be concerned with this financial loss, with money flow in the firm of complex loans from Edgerton to Hinsdill, secured by a mortgage on Stephen\'s vast property in Vermont. The Bank of Bennington is part of this complex financial and mortgage agreement involving multiple debts, promissory notes, endorsers and a mortgage to secure them all. The longest document in this lot, the one with the ribbon at top, has six handwritten pages and begins:

\"Stephen Hinsdill\'s Mort.to Uriah Edgerton Consideration of Fifty Thousand Dollars Dated February 1, 1837.\"

Another one of these documents begins:

\"Uriah Edgerton ...Dear Sir, I am informed my friend Deacon Hinsdill has failed in business to a great amount - of honorary debts (as he terms them)....\"
