Original August 1839 handwritten business correspondence sent from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Robinson & Shields of Tiffin, Ohio.
Written on distinctive yellow/buff period paper, the letter concerns a financial and commercial matter involving a note, payment, and related business arrangements.
The correspondence provides an interesting firsthand example of long-distance American commerce during the 1830s, when financial and business matters between merchants were conducted through handwritten letters, drafts, notes, and documents carried through the postal system.
The sheet was folded to form its own mailing cover. The exterior retains the handwritten address to Robinson & Shields in Tiffin, Ohio, along with the period postal marking and manuscript postal notation.
The folded exterior also bears an early handwritten filing notation:
“Atkins Morrison & Co.
August 1839”
The document retains attractive early 19th-century penmanship throughout, with the original folds and mailing configuration still evident.
CONDITION:
Antique condition with expected wear from age, mailing, handling, and storage. The paper shows original folds, areas of fold wear and separation, small tears, edge wear, spotting, and toning. Evidence of the original sealing area remains, but the seal itself is no longer present.
