1843 US STAMPLESS POSTAL COVER - SAVANNAH, GEO. TO MADISON, NJ
Addressed to William Gibbons, Esq. — Featuring Original Sender Signature & Crown Blindstamp--- POSTAL HISTORY SPECIFICS ---
  • Origin/Postmark: Savannah, Georgia. Bold, crisp strike of the red circular date stamp (CDS) reading "SAVANNAH GEO. / APR 23" flanked by decorative five-pointed stars.
  • Postal Rate: Single-sheet letter rate of 25 cents written in matching red manuscript ink in the upper right corner. Under the Postal Act of 1825, 25¢ was the mandatory prepaid premium fee for domestic mail traveling over 400 miles.
  • Transit & Route: Carried via the Great Atlantic Mail Route in April 1843. It likely traveled by coastal steamship from Savannah to Charleston, up through the mid-Atlantic via the Wilmington & Raleigh Railroad, and finally into northern New Jersey via the Morris and Essex Railroad. Total transit time was approximately 5–7 days.
  • Paper Maker's Blindstamp: The corner features a pristine, un-inked embossed manufacturer's seal (blindstamp) showcasing a prominent royal crown nested within a circular text border. This denotes premium, imported British or European "Royal" grade stationery.
  • Archival Docketing: Tucked cleanly inside the back flap is a beautiful, dark-ink signature reading: "Elias Richardson, April 22, 1843." This archival notation marks the exact date of composition—just one day before it was dropped in the Savannah mail system.
--- HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE & PROVENANCE ---The recipient, William Gibbons, Esq. (1794–1852), was an incredibly wealthy Southern planter and northern businessman whose legacy is deeply cemented in American history:
  • Drew University Connection: In the 1830s, Gibbons purchased a massive New Jersey estate he named "The Forest." He built a grand Greek-Revival mansion there that was completed in 1836. His family later sold the property to found the Drew Theological Seminary, and today that structure stands proudly as Mead Hall, the iconic main administration building of Drew University.
  • Horse Racing Royalty: Gibbons was a legendary sportsman, breeder, and owner of Fashion, the historic hall-of-fame thoroughbred mare known as the "Queen of the American Turf." In 1842—just one year prior to this letter—Fashion famously defeated the champion Southern stallion Boston in a highly publicized North-vs-South match race.
  • The "Gibbons v. Ogden" Connection: William was the son and primary heir of Thomas Gibbons, the central figure in the landmark 1824 Supreme Court case Gibbons v. Ogden, which forever defined federal control over interstate commerce.
--- CONDITION & SHIPPING NOTE ---
