his is an original stampless folded letter with postal cancel, dated March 21, 1847, sent from Winthrop, Kennebec County, Maine to the Selectmen of Marlborough, Massachusetts. The writer is Elijah Wood, inquiring about the settlement history of John Wood, referencing his move from Plymouth to Marlborough around 1787 and genealogical details about his family.

The letter is a fine example of mid-19th century stampless correspondence, showing period handwriting, postal routing, and community concerns about settlement and residence records. Folded letter retains its address panel with red circular postal marking and is addressed: “Selectmen of the town of Marlborough in the County of Middlesex”.

Richard Farwell (1790s–1853) of Marlborough, Massachusetts, was a Harvard-educated lawyer and prominent local figure. He helped incorporate the North Branch of the Fitchburg Railroad, which reached Feltonville (part of Marlborough) in 1852 — the same year this letter was mailed. Farwell built the Maple Street house later known as the Farwell/O’Connell House, today a historic landmark. His family remained active in the community; his son J. M. Farwell purchased the Marlborough Mirror newspaper in 1861, and his daughter Lucy married Shalman E. Morton.
