Original 1858 St. Louis, Alton & Chicago Railroad transportation pass issued in Chicago prior to the Civil War.
Dated September 3, 1858, and completed in period handwriting. Route issued from Chicago to Alton. Signed by the General Superintendent in original iron-gall ink.
The reverse contains the full printed liability clause typical of mid-19th century railroad policy language, including “This will pass but the person named” and risk assumption text — an excellent example of early railroad legal structure.
The St. Louis, Alton & Chicago line later became part of the Chicago & Alton Railroad system, an important Midwestern route connecting Chicago and St. Louis.
