1859 Autograph Letter Signed by Poet & Abolitionist John Pierpont – Responding to Autograph Request – Offered for the First Time in Over 70 Years
Offered here is an original handwritten letter dated April 8, 1859, from John Pierpont (1785–1866), the renowned American poet, Unitarian minister, abolitionist, and reformer, penned from West Medford, Massachusetts. This brief but eloquent note was written in response to an autograph request from Mr. W. H. Hostetler, and includes Pierpont’s bold full signature at the bottom.
In beautiful period ink on a single sheet of laid paper, Pierpont writes:
> “My dear Sir,
Your request, in regard to the autograph, is most cheerfully answered, with the best wishes for your prosperity and happiness.
Yours respectfully,
J. Pierpont”
This piece has been preserved in a private collection and is being offered to the public for the first time in over 70 years.
