The Great Eastern — 692 feet long, displacing 32,160 tons, six times larger than any ship previously built — had finally made her maiden voyage to New York in June 1860, and this centerfold captures her at sea in all her extraordinary scale and power. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who died a week after her disastrous maiden trial in September 1858, the Great Eastern was one of the supreme engineering achievements of the Victorian era. She would eventually find her true purpose in 1866, when she successfully laid the first permanent transatlantic telegraph cable — transforming global communications and connecting the Old and New Worlds in real-time for the first time. Spurgeons new Tabernacle at Blackfriars Road in Southwark was under construction in 1859 — it would open in 1861, seating 6,000 worshippers with standing room for 2,000 more, making it the largest Baptist church in the world. Spurgeon had been drawing crowds of 10,000 to temporary venues since his arrival in London in 1854, and the construction of his permanent Tabernacle was one of the great religious events of the Victorian era. Queen Victoria attended one of his services. His weekly printed sermons circulated in editions of 25,000 copies — the largest circulation of any regular publication in the world.
