1860 Abraham Lincoln–Hannibal Hamlin Presidential Campaign Envelope — Carpenter & Allen, Boston
Original 1860 presidential campaign envelope featuring engraved portraits of Republican presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln and his running mate Hannibal Hamlin.
The portraits are identified beneath as “LINCOLN.” and “HAMLIN.” The engraver\'s imprint reads:
“Engraved by Carpenter & Allen, 247 Wash\'n St. Boston” with “Copyright secured.” below.
Carpenter & Allen were Boston engravers and plate printers operating at 247 Washington Street in 1860. This Lincoln–Hamlin dual-portrait campaign design is identified in specialized political-cover references as Milgram AL-95. Contemporary examples are known postally used during the 1860 presidential campaign.
This example is particularly appealing because it is unused, with no address, postage stamp or postal cancellation obscuring the original campaign design. The reverse is clean and unremarkable.
The envelope retains its warm buff/orange paper color and the engraved portraits remain sharp and highly detailed. There is expected light toning and minor age/storage evidence, including a few small spots visible in the photographs. A small pencil inscription on the back lower left corner reads \'50\'. requires us to disclosed whether an item is New or Used; this item is neither ... it is Original and Unused. Please examine all images carefully for condition.
