Original handwritten letter dated February 12, 1861, written from Rogersville, Tennessee, only weeks before the outbreak of the Civil War. The multi-page letter is believed to have been written by W. F. Smart and is addressed to Miss Mina. Although it begins as a friendly Valentine’s Day letter, it quickly develops into an outstanding discussion of the growing national crisis over secession and the future of the Union.
The writer discusses Valentine’s Day customs before turning to politics, expressing strong Unionist views while criticizing disunionists and commenting on the political climate in East Tennessee. He praises Congressman Thomas A. R. Nelson, one of the region’s leading Unionists and future president of the East Tennessee Convention, and discusses recent voting results, local elections, saleeering, business affairs, marriage, and public opinion. The letter captures everyday life and political uncertainty during the weeks immediately preceding the Civil War, before Tennessee officially joined the Confederacy.
Condition is very good overall with expected mailing folds and light age toning. The handwriting is dark, attractive, and easily legible throughout. Please review all photographs carefully for condition and content.
