Original 1865 membership ticket for the Shipwrecked Fishermen & Mariners’ Royal Benevolent Society, issued to James Tierney of North Shields. North Shields is a historic Tyne fishing port on the northeast coast of England, opposite South Shields and near Tynemouth, long known for its fish quay, boatyards, and lifeboat crews.

The ticket is printed in blue with an ornate border and dramatic engraved vignette showing shipwreck survivors being rescued on shore. Biblical texts are included (Acts xxviii. 2; Job xxix. 13). The piece is hand-completed in ink with Tierney’s name, abode, and a January 31, 1865 date. Numbered 4389. Signed by the local agent, with “North Shields” clearly noted at the bottom.

The reverse side provides the society’s rules and scale of relief, outlining grants to widows, orphans, and dependent families of shipwrecked mariners, drowned fishermen, and lost boats. It also includes directions for widows applying for aid, emphasizing the society’s crucial role in the dangerous life of 19th-century British seafaring families. Printed signature of Francis Lean, R.N., Secretary, at the society’s London Bridge headquarters.
