Original manuscript receipt, San Francisco, August 2, 1867, documenting a $250 campaign \"assessment\" paid by candidate W. C. Burnett for his place on the Union Party ticket for District Attorney. Signed by the treasurer of the Union County Committee. Docketed on verso \"Union Co. Com. / Receipt $250. / August 2/67 / Assessment.\"

A nice piece of Reconstruction-era California political ephemera — illustrates the period practice of parties charging their own nominees an \"assessment\" to help fund the campaign. Iron-gall ink on ruled paper, period folds, light foxing/staining consistent with age, deckled edge. Single sheet, written on recto with docket notation on verso.
