Written from Jacksonville, Illinois, Sept. 25, 1871.


Mentions enclosing a letter to the Bishop of Vermont and requests its publication.


Signed clearly at the close: “W.H. Milburn”, with his well-known designation added below, “blind chaplain Congress.”


Milburn was a nationally recognized Methodist clergyman, preacher, and public speaker despite losing his sight in childhood. He served as Chaplain to both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, earning the lasting title “Blind Chaplain.”

This scarce letter is a strong example of Milburn’s autograph, with fine association to his career bridging politics, religion, and public life.

Biographical Note:

William Henry Milburn (1823–1903) lost his sight as a boy but rose to become one of the most famous preachers of 19th-century America. Known for his eloquence and charisma, he served multiple terms as Chaplain of the House of Representatives (1845–1851, 1853–1855, 1885–1887) and Chaplain of the U.S. Senate (1893–1903). He lectured widely across the country, delivering sermons to packed audiences, and became a symbol of perseverance and faith. His story inspired both religious and secular audiences, securing him a permanent place in American history.

Dear Sir,

Enclosed I send you the copy of a letter to the Bishop of Vermont which explains itself. As I presume many of your readers will be interested to see it, may I beg that you will kindly publish it with such heading or notice as you may think proper.
