Full front page — the entire front of Harpers Weekly devoted to the portrait and memory of Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts, who died on March 11, 1874. Sumner was one of the great figures in the history of American democracy: a U.S. Senator who fought slavery and racism with everything he had for over twenty years. In 1856, Representative Preston Brooks of South Carolina walked onto the Senate floor and beat Sumner nearly to death with a metal-tipped cane — because Sumner had given a speech calling out pro-slavery Senators. Brooks was celebrated in the South. Sumner recovered, returned to his Senate seat, and fought for Black civil rights through the Civil War, Reconstruction, and his final days. He died while his beloved Civil Rights Bill — which would guarantee Black Americans equal access to public accommodations — was still pending. The bill passed in 1875, one year after his death, as the Civil Rights Act of 1875 — and was struck down by the Supreme Court in 1883.
