Offered here is an original autograph letter signed (ALS) by George Lillie Craik (1837–1905), noted literary scholar and professor of English at Queen’s College, Belfast. Dated 25 January 1882 from his residence at 1 Marine Parade, Holywood, Belfast, the letter is addressed to Dr. Gilchrist and politely acknowledges receipt of a note earlier that morning.
Craik was part of the prominent Craik literary family—his uncle, also named George Lillie Craik (1798–1866), was a widely known writer and collaborator with publisher Charles Knight. The younger Craik carried on the tradition, becoming a highly respected academic voice in Ireland. As professor at Queen’s College, Belfast (now Queen’s University), he was central to shaping 19th-century English studies and education reform.
This piece is a fine example of his handwriting and signature, showing his elegant 19th-century script. Though brief, the letter is neatly written on a folded sheet with his full signature “Geo. L. Craik.”
