1882 BRIDE WIDOW JOS KOEHLER MECHANICAL VICTORIAN TRADE CARD MOVABLE CHROMO RARE For Sale

Today we are pleased to offer this wonderful 1882 Victorian mechanical chromolithographed novelty trade card titled Bride and Widow, registered by Jos. Koehler of New York. The card uses a single central pivot to create a before-and-after transformation. Turning the illustrated bonnet changes the portrait from a young bride into an older widow, using the same hat, shoulders, jewelry, and printed gold background to create a striking comic transformation.

The front is printed with a rich gold-toned background, a floral bonnet, lace-trimmed bodice, dark choker, cross pendant, and the printed caption “BRIDE AND WIDOW” below the portrait. Along the lower curve of the image is the 1882 registration line reading “PAT. APPLIED FOR & REGISTERED BY JOS. KOEHLER, N.Y. 1882.” These small mechanical paper novelties belong to the late 19th-century trade card and chromolithograph advertising culture, when merchants and publishers used color printing, movable parts, die-cut forms, humorous transformations, and visual tricks to draw attention in shop counters, scrap albums, and mailed promotional pieces.

The blank rectangular panel at the bottom was likely intended for a local advertiser, merchant imprint, or handwritten promotional message, but this example remains unprinted there. The reverse is plain, with no advertising imprint or handwriting. The result is a strong stock example of Koehler’s mechanical novelty work, combining Victorian humor, courtship imagery, mourning imagery, women’s fashion, movable paper engineering, and Gilded Age printing design in one small format.

Physical condition is good overall for a fragile, roughly 140-year-old mechanical paper card, but it does show expected age and handling wear. The front retains attractive color and a pleasing metallic gold effect, with general toning, scattered surface speckling, small marks, light rubbing to the printed surface, edge darkening, tiny nicks, corner wear, and minor irregularity along the border. The lower blank panel shows light soil, small scattered spots, and handling marks. The central metal eyelet remains present, and the movable portrait/hat element is intact.

The plain back shows overall age toning, foxing, small dark specks, faint surface grime, edge and corner wear, and a darker ring around the central pivot area. There are no modern markings on the reverse. The card will be mailed in an acid-free poly sleeve and a rigid toploader case as pictured.
