Historic D. L. Moody Signed Letter & D. W. Whittle / William R. Moody Bible ArchiveOffered here is an exceptional collection of Dwight L. Moody (D. L. Moody), Major Daniel Webster Whittle, and William R. Moody-related material, centered around an authentic handwritten and signed D. L. Moody letter dated July 1, 1884, together with a historic Bible carrying remarkable Whittle/Moody provenance. The collection was acquired together and is being offered intact as a single historical archive. The centerpiece is an authentic handwritten D. L. Moody letter, written from Northfield on July 1, 1884, addressed “My Dear Major” and signed by D. L. Moody. The context of the archive indicates the recipient was Major Daniel Webster Whittle, Moody’s longtime associate and fellow evangelist. Also included is a Bagster’s Polyglot Bible containing multiple handwritten inscriptions documenting an extraordinary chain of association.Among the inscriptions are:1893: Presentation of the Bible by Clement Davis of London to Major D. W. Whittle.August 29, 1900: An inscription recording the Bible’s presentation to William R. Moody from D. W. Whittle.William Revell Moody was the son of D. L. Moody, making the inscription particularly significant in establishing the Bible’s continued connection to the Moody/Whittle circle. The Bible contains additional later provenance, including a 1936 presentation inscription associated with Mrs. William R. Moody and the Carne family, along with related correspondence and documents that help preserve the later history of the collection. The archive includes:* Authentic D. L. Moody handwritten and signed letter, Northfield, July 1, 1884* Antique Bagster’s Polyglot Bible* 1893 D. W. Whittle presentation inscription* 1900 William R. Moody / D. W. Moody-related manuscript/letterhead material* 1936 correspondence associated with the collection’s provenance* Religious manuscripts and handwritten material* Period newspaper and historical material* Additional Moody-related papers and ephemera shown in the photographsThe combination of an authentic D. L. Moody letter and a Bible independently connecting Major D. W. Whittle with D. L. Moody’s son William R. Moody makes this a particularly interesting group for collectors of American religious history, evangelism, Christian manuscripts, autographs and D. L. Moody material.Condition: The Bible and documents show expected age-related wear. The 1884 letter has folds, toning/staining and other evidence of age.
