This is the original late-19th-century edition, not a modern reprint. The series was compiled largely from firsthand narratives contributed by Union and Confederate officers who participated in or witnessed the events described.
The four volumes trace the Civil War from the attack on Fort Sumter through the surrender at Appomattox. They are extensively illustrated with portraits, maps, battle plans, historical scenes, diagrams, and facsimiles.

DETAILED CONDITION
Volume I
The text binding remains generally intact, but the front cover is attached by only a very small remaining portion and is hanging on by a thread. The spine covering is missing, and a large section of the outer cover material is torn away. Some pages are loose. The book remains largely readable with careful handling.
Volume II
The binding is solid. Approximately the first three preliminary leaves are missing, but these occur before the title page. The main text remains present and readable. The exterior shows substantial wear and damage.
Volume III
The spine covering is completely missing. The front and back covers are detached. Approximately the final two or three leaves are detached from the binding. The first three preliminary leaves before the title page are also detached. The remaining main text block is comparatively solid and readable.
Volume IV
The spine covering has significant loss. The cover is loose but remains attached. The first decorative leaf is approximately halfway detached from the binding. No preliminary pages appear to be missing. The main binding remains solid enough for careful reading.
All four volumes are fragile and show extensive age, rubbing, discoloration, tears, spine loss, detached or loose covers, loose leaves, edge wear, and general deterioration. Additional small flaws may be present that have not been individually described.
