MOST WORSHIPFUL GRAND LODGE, A. F. AND A. M. STATE OF CONNECTICUT. Hartford, CT: June 29, 1887. “To All Ladies and Brethren in Connecticut: LOOK OUT FOR THIS FRAUD. A man representing himself as Past Master of Surprise Valley Lodge… Cedarville, Modoc County, California, has been imposing upon the craft in Connecticut…”. The broadside goes on to describe the culprit as a 65-year old, feeble looking man, who is “the worst kind of dead beat.” The broadside bears the signature of J. K. Wheeler, Grand Secretary-- I'm not sure if it's printed or a real signature. Original, antique broadside; single sheet (watermarked “Extra Fine 1886”), measuring 11 x 8.5 inches, printed on one side. Folded for mailing. Near fine condition; creased at old folds, else crisp and clean.
Brother J.K. Wheeler was a notable 19th-century Freemason who served as the Grand Secretary for the Grand Lodge of Connecticut, A.F. & A.M. in the 1870s and 1880s. Based in Hartford, Connecticut, he acted as the central administrative leader for the state's Masonic lodges, managing correspondence, historical records, and lodge proceedings. An interesting, ephemeral piece of Masonic history.
