Though short-lived, they left a strongmark on early baseball history, finishing with a 1887 National League pennantand claiming the unofficial “World’s Championship” after defeating the St.Louis Browns in a postseason series that helped pave the way for the modernWorld Series.
The club played its home games at Recreation Park and becamebest known for an aggressive attempt to build a powerhouse roster in themid-1880s under owner Frederick Kimball Stearns. That effort brought in severalstar players, including the famous “Big Four” from Buffalo: Dan Brouthers, JackRowe, Hardy Richardson, and Deacon White.
Among the most notable Wolverines were Hall of Famers DanBrouthers, Ned Hanlon, Deacon White, and Sam Thompson. Other prominent namesincluded Charlie Bennett, Fred Dunlap, Deacon McGuire, and Chief Zimmer.Despite their success in 1887, financial struggles led to the team foldingafter the 1888 season, ending a brief but influential run in early professionalbaseball.
