Offered here is an original autograph letter signed (ALS) by Frederick D. Sherman (1862–1916), American poet and literary figure of the late 19th century. The letter is addressed to Herbert D. Ward (1863–1919), noted author and journalist, husband of novelist Elizabeth Stuart Phelps.
Content & Transcription:
Sherman politely declines Ward’s invitation to go sailing, citing a prior engagement, but promises that he and his wife will visit soon:
> “My Dear Mr. Ward:
Again I have to say no to your kind invitation to go sailing.
This afternoon I had already promised to be another fellow’s fellow, and go in to town. I am sorry.
Mrs. Sherman and I are expecting to present ourselves at your hospitable doors early next week.

Biographical Notes:
Frederick D. Sherman (1862–1916) was a New York poet and editor, contributing to The Century and Scribner’s magazines, and part of the turn-of-the-century American literary scene.
Herbert D. Ward (1863–1919) authored both fiction and non-fiction, often with adventurous or historical themes, and collaborated with his wife, the prominent novelist Elizabeth Stuart Phelps.
Condition:
Very good with expected folds from mailing, light toning, and a small stain at the upper corner. Strong, bold signature.
Significance & Collector Interest:
This is a fine association piece linking two important literary figures of the late 19th century. Letters of F.D. Sherman are scarce, and those addressed to fellow authors such as Ward are particularly desirable.
