This is a script or playbill for a Cantonese opera likely from the late Qing dynasty (dated in pencil on the cover \"7.13.97\") about Guan Zhong, the famous statesman of the Spring and Autumn period, and Duke Huan of Qi. Published by the Dangui Tang troupe. Apparently seen in San Fransisco given the pencil note which also noted, \"Heart Song. Novel.\"
Overall measurements about 5\" x 8.25\". There is a cover page in orange and 10 additional pages of Chinese characters (5 pages front and back).
The pages are uncut. There seems to be something once sticky that keeps them from fully opening, and I\'m not going to try to separate them more fully. See photos.
My brother speaks Chinese and translated this for me as you can see in the final 2 images.
This was in a box of ephemera dating from the last decade of the 1800s. Most of the other items are from this family\'s travels out west in the 1890\'s as well as sketchbooks from Philadelphia where they lived.
Incredibly rare.
